Our team has 25 years’ experience in warehousing and logistics, with a focus on pharmaceuticals and electronics. With an established logistics consulting business, and – in response to customer demand – STL Warehousing was established in 2006.
Evolved out of real customers’ needs
We didn’t create STL Warehousing. Our customers did. Yes, we decided on the business name and incorporated the company, etc., but the essence of the business evolved out of real customer needs.
It all started in 2006, when several customers of our logistics consulting business asked us to recommend a warehousing (3PL) provider to accommodate their specific needs.
That sounded OK in the beginning, but when we started digging, we soon discovered that most existing Third Party Warehousing (3PL) providers weren’t terribly flexible. Far from designing their warehouses and processes around the needs of their customers, for the most part, they required their customers to squeeze into existing systems. What’s more, they didn’t provide any real assistance with planning the move to the new warehouse, or with setting up the processes.
Our customers wanted flexibility, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, high volume split-case picking
Our customers wanted more. They wanted a warehouse that was built around their actual needs – not something they had to mould to. They wanted to efficiently and cost-effectively service multiple customers with split case, high frequency orders. They wanted visibility: a real-time window into their warehouse, so they could see the precise status of any order at any time. And they wanted efficient day-to-day communication with the staff managing their warehouse.
This meant they needed a sophisticated warehouse management system (WMS) and an equally sophisticated helpdesk solution. And both needed to be custom-integrated with our own internal network. What’s more, the entire system needed to operate with minimal cost and waste.
We combined the best technologies with Lean warehousing processes
So we decided to give it to them. Only to a select group of customers, in the beginning, and only one at a time. We sourced one of the best warehouse management systems available, and one of the best help desk solutions, and we integrated them as required. Then we developed a “Lean Warehousing” methodology to manage cost and eliminate waste from the warehouse.
And it worked.
We made it repeatable
The only remaining challenge was making it repeatable, so we could exceed our customers expectations and consistently provide best in class performance. This all came down to our staff. To succeed in their jobs every day, they needed the right training, the right tools and the authority to do their job properly.
To achieve this, we set team KPIs around inventory accuracy, timeliness of order despatch, and housekeeping standards. We put incentives in place to ensure our staff worked proactively to minimise customer complaints. And we rotated staff from warehouse to warehouse, so everyone was exposed to a variety of business processes, and everyone warehouse enjoyed a consistency of approach and shared culture.
Then we went to market
Satisfied that it was a completely best-practice, repeatable approach, we offered it to all-comers.
